Yes it is. Choosing the CC option gives me the same protections as any other CC.
Running it as a CC still pulls the cash from your bank account, since that is where the money lies.
Using a true credit card gives you a cushion - a purgatory - in which to hold the disputed charge until it is resolved; this contrasts with a debt card which requires the bank to place the money back into your account. I also get 1% cash back on all my credit card purchases, which is nice. It just stores up the balance and deposits $25 into my savings once I hit the threshold.
It's anti-Dave Ramsey, but works well if one is disciplined.
The only time I really use Debit is my Target Debit card, which is a separately-issued card linked to your bank account. You get 5% off your purchase for it though, which works awesome on groceries. Especially when stacked with coupons on coupons.
Your choice at the register makes no difference on your protections. And your charges will still be directed straight to your bank account.
Speeking of Dave Ramsey, Hes the one that I heard say to always choose the CC option when using a DC because the transaction is much harder to hack.
Yes the funds come from my account but there are electronic protections against ID theft.

They hit you first for just a couple of bucks to see if they can make the transaction work then they go for the big bucks. I recently had to replace my debit card when my bank called to make sure I wasn't trying to buy a plane ticket in India.
They hit me for 2 bucks and when that went through, the tried for the airline tickets.
Thankful that the bank took the initiative to block the purchase and contact me. Have had very good results with US Bank.

There is a huge difference. Namely, whose money you are using. For a CC, you are using someone else's money. For a DC, you are using your money, regardless of the electronic method utilized.
Dave Ramsey says very few useful things, mostly repeats his overused cliches that only he thinks are funny. He is wrong about this, among many other things. Use CC for the best protection if your assets.

Thanks for the heads up. I try to use cash as much as possible, but the CC is more convienent so I don't have to carry WADS of cash.
All the anti-CC BS makes me laugh every time. Owning a CC is like owning a gun, you have to be disciplined and use it appropriately. Nothing bad happens if we do our part but if you want to f*@k up the opportunity is there. Controlling yourself shouldn't be that hard except when it comes to food.
