Check Your License Plate

We had one of our employees pulled over by a LEO today while driving a company truck. He was temporarily detained because the truck was reported as stolen. As it turned-out, it appears that someone had stolen a similar style truck and switched the license plate with one of our company trucks. Don't know how long it has been that way. In any event, we sent someone to retrieve the employee but our truck has been impounded until we can get a replacement license plate installed.

What a hassle and loss of productivity. The work the employee was sent to do did not get done, one of our trucks is out of commission, we have to send someone to report a stolen tag and get a replacement, and we have to retrieve our truck from impoundment in another town. I sure wish I could catch a thief in the act of his BS.

I had a similar thing happen to me 7 or 8 years ago. My tag was stolen one night, when I contacted the PD I was told that a car just like mine was stolen the same night and aparently the same person took my tag and put it on the stolen car. Had my tag been changed with the other I probably wouldn't have noticed it

Seriously? There is no other way to provide for a temporary tag in such a situation and they impound the vehicle. That seems not right. The car lot can create temporary tags all day long.

Is it just me or howcome noone(like the officer) checked the VIN?

My tag was stolen once, its now held on with 12 screws, 8 into the frame. No one has touched it since, weird.

They eventially checked the vehicle VIN and discovered it did not match the VIN registered to the tag.

That is some great police work there - make the VICTIMS of the theft suffer, pay impound fees, etc, even after its established that its their vehicle.

Not getting my plates swapped is just a side benefit to my personalized plates.

I hadn't thought about having to pay an impound fee; surely not.

I use rivets for just this reason, they will go find an easier plate to grab.
