It would be wonderful to see this happen. http://www.guns.com/2015/05/08/house-advances-amendment-to-sell-milsurp-1911s-through-cmp/ "An add-on to the upcoming National Defense Authorization Act that passed committee includes a plan to transfer the U.S. Army’s remaining stock of .45 ACP 1911A1 pistols to the Civilian Marksmanship Program."
There's been a butt-load of discussion about this on the CMP forum, and the best comments relate to the fact that 1911's of better quality and accuracy are being made today. Therefore, depending on how the CMP prices these milsurps (assuming they do get them), you'd be paying mainly for the history of the piece. Not like a M1 Garand or M1903. Hopefully the CMP will keep this in mind and price the service grade mixmaster 1911's below market value - say, $1000 or less, depending on maker. Again, assuming the CMP does get them.
Yeah, prolly never happen as long as the current Prevaricator-In-Chief remains in office. But we can hope!
Here is a direct answer from the CMP when asked about the 1911's: Sir, The amendment to the bill has only passed through one set of hoops. It will go before the house at the end of this month and will have several other hoops to jump through to reach approval. This process will take years to reach completion. If it does become a reality there will not be a list, an announcement will be made through our sales email and the pistols will be sold on a first come first served basis. Thank you for your support. The history is the only reason to own one.) I think we sold this model to some of our allies for $200 or so if I remember right.
I predict that the amendment will be added to the bill as a negotiation tool....to be taken out later as a "concession" to the democrats in exchange for some other pork. If it ever did pass, the feeding frenzy that will ensue will be epic.
So this is now a done deal. Odumbo had signed the NDAA bill. How do you suppose these will be sold? In-store only, or do you suppose they will allow shipment to a local FFL? Any FFL or a designated?
All the law does is authorize the SecDef to release the 1911s to the CMP it doesn't compel him to do so. I am not sure what Secretary Carter will do. He may simply ignore it and try to wait out Congress.
