Unless you want/need to be mobile, you will always get more PC for the money and better performance from a desktop...I currently have a variety of each at home (we run a small biz). The laptops are good for being mobile and moving around, but the desktop is the best performing PC.

We have a desk top w/ printer/scanner/fax and a wireless laptop, and two teenagers both have wireless laptops, and I just bought my little girl a PC from a guy who rebuilds them for 50 bucks. She plugged it into her 32" tv so she can watch movies or do her school work on her tv, but I'm sure when she gets older she will want a laptop. I actually love working on her computer with the 32" screen.

I run an engineering workstation laptop with docking station, large dual monitors, full size keyboard, mouse, etc. As far the human interfacing goes, when docked, you would never know the difference (whether you're working on a desktop or laptop.) With the advancements in technology, they can pack plenty of performance and horsepower into portable machines - all the processor, RAM, video RAM, storage, etc. I can do everything I need to do on nice beautiful large-screen displays at home, or I can un-dock for on-site client meetings/presentations and take it (along with all necessary files, software, etc) wherever, without having to move files from one machine to another.

Consequently, one of my clients provides me with a similar series Dell laptop as my machine (pre-loaded with all of their sorftware) that snaps right into my docking station, so I can alternate between their machine and mine, and share the same displays. Handy!

"Desktop??? Aint nobody got time fa' dat!"

I hate lugging a laptop around, and dealing with chargers and batteries. There are too many counterfeit accessories out there.

They're still useful, but they get more useful the less mobile they are.
