I find that statistic saddening, but probably accurate. I was a counselor at our local BSA summer camp and taught numerous merit badges as well as ran the rifle/shotgun range when I was of age and even then the return camper rate was falling. I can only imagine what it's like in the computer/Xbox age.
I was active with local troops when I was stationed in Hawaii even though I have all girls.
I was on the elevator of bad decisions at age 12, mom making my join boy scouts the first time I got a ride home in a cop car instead of letting dad beat my @ss turned me back on the right road. Needless to say I have a special place in my heart for all things scouting. Skills for a lifetime.
Eagle Scout, Troop 637 from Wagoner, Ok, 1987. Order of the Arrow (Ordeal). Currently an Assistant Cubmaster, soon to be Cubmaster.
At age 40, I still remember and can name all the adults and the vast majority of the boys who were involved in my Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troops. I still keep in touch with some of them.
Scouting was the best thing I ever did as a kid. If you are a Dad of boy(s) and are not involved in Scouting, please check it out.
My brother and I both got ours from troop 129 in OKC, his in 2001 and mine in 2004. Another question, anybody work staff at a scout camp? I spent many summers at Slippery Falls near Tishamingo and at George Thomas near Apache.
