I've thought about pepper spray, but I really don't want to make this very large pit bull mad. My main concern at this point is retaliation from the neighbors if I end up having to kill it. They're fairly shady people and I'm almost positive a dead dog would result in some flat tires or maybe some pot shots through my windows.

I doubt the pepper stay will cause more aggression out of that dog. Plus your right about worrying of retaliation from your neighbors if you shoot the dog. Pitbulls are just like any other dog, maybe buy a big can of bear spray, and keep spraying until he retreats. Speak with your neighbors about your fears of being attacked. I own a protective pitbull, and she is an intimidating girl, so I stay extra careful when I let her out. But she is very friendly in the right conditions. I bring her into our store and she has been friendly to everyone. But if she's in the yard and you are on the other side of the fence she will bark bark and bark, with her tail wagging at full speed.

I self-deleted my previous post on this topic only because it was pointed out that it violated posted forum policy that I was unaware of. My concern was that shooting a vicious dog out of self defense inside a crowded residential neighborhood is a terrible option.. even if a person is in fear of serious injury or death to their family or themselves.

On a dog, even a dog the size of a Great Dane, from a close range you will get a pass through of the bullet. Even a good hollow point will not have time to expand unless it hits heavy bone. If your exit angle causes the bullet to hit the driveway, the sidewalk, the side of a brick home, the metal of a car bumper or even a buried brick or stone / rock in the ground at the right angle... there is a very good chance you will get a ricochet.

I wouldn't want it on my conscience that I shot a dog out of fear or trying to save my pet... and hit a innocent by-stander...kid or adult.. by mistake.

Just this week, my city's police received yet another call about several vicious pit bulls roaming a residential neighborhood. Animal control officers tried to catch one and it charged the officers. Police officers fired and hit it twice...I don't know where it was hit.. but the police here generally use .40 cal & 9mm's loaded with TAP / Critical Duty ammo ... and the dog survived its wounds long enough to run off and escape capture. So, while I can understand why many of you strongly disagreed with my previous suggestion.. and why such suggestions are banned from posting on the forum... shooting a vicious dog should be the absolute last option anyone should ever consider.. in a urban setting. I would only do it if it had actually attacked me or someone else. I don't believe I would do it to save a pet... as there is just too much risk to others involved.

Fortunately most antifreeze is now made with Propylene Glycol instead of Ethylene Glycol and it's not very harmful to animals compared to the old stuff. Propylene Glycol is also used in Miracle Whip and shampoo.

Back to OP,

Get a paper chain going before you have to drop that dog. This will only help you legally when you do.

FYI, dogs don't change their habits without the owner's changing the dogs habits.

I would invest in a can of bear spray. A non-lethal response, if possible, will be the least stressful for you and your family. I hate strife with neighbors. You have a right and expectation of privacy, safety, and security, especially on your private property.

An empty can of non-lethal whatever would further demonstrate your efforts to deescalate/diffuse the situation.

If you are planning on moving sometime in the future, might add this situation to the "list of reasons to move now". Don't want any protective orders granted against you.

Would I be wrong to assume that if using pepper spray on an attacking animal was justified then deadly force would also be justified in the eyes of the Law?

Pepper Spray is less lethal on humans and animals. I have sprayed close to 60-70 people and a handful of dogs. Spraying the dogs proved to be 100% effective in changing their behavior enough so I was not forced to shoot them. Of course nothing is 100% effective.

Those dogs with whom I had repeat contacts after spraying chose to ignore me. I wonder if similar to exposure to a skunk.

If pepper spray is safe enough for me to get sprayed with in training then it is safe enough for dogs.

Since I'm a huge dog lover, never miss an episode of Dog Whisperer, I'm all for anything that protects people without injuring the dog.

Having said that, always have fall back plans should plan A fail.

bear mace usually does the trick, i know there is a pitbull down the road that escapes daily but stays very clear of my lawn. Just the sight of me still sends that dog running.

made multiple complaints nothing is done, the dog will eventually bite a child or something before anything is actually done about it.
