Good luck on your quest. You will have no trouble passing a Technician exam. It can be quite rewarding if you keep at it and advance. I too ran into an antenna predicament, and kind of fell out of the hobby for quite a while now. Also sold my 2M portable.

I have a Technician Plus ham license and a General Radiotelephone Operator License with ship radar endorsement (not to be confused with a General ham license), both from quite a few years back. Be glad you no longer have to take a morse code test to advance as a Ham. With my ringing ears it was quite a challenge.

Get off my lawn.
Educate me, please - what's the advantage of a ham radio for keeping in touch with someone in the same state... as opposed to a cell phone?

I don't want to talk to my grandpa. I want to spend time with him. Hamming is what he likes to do and I would like to share that with him. I can't think of a better way to spend time with my grandpa then over the air across hundreds of miles with a hobby we both enjoy. I can't explain it any simpler than that.

Dustin,

The Aeronautical Center Amateur Radio Club will have a Technician license exam class this fall.

You can check out the club website at www.w5paa.net

Contact Paul Thompson at [email protected] if you are interested in attending.

No cost for the class, $30 for book and $16 for the exam.

Hope this helps.
