Studying: I used hamtestonline.com and also used apps on my smartphone. They have some good test apps that make it very easy to study anytime you have a few seconds during they day. After the fact, there are lots of good apps for ham use.

Radios: Why limit to one form of communication (Ham vs. CB)? I originally got into it for emergency comms use. I would definitely get a dual band mobile and when you get a hand held, get a dual band as well. I travel a lot. The 440 MHZ band certainly isn't used as much, but it is worth it. The main skywarn group out of Altus uses a 440 repeater for their comms and that's where most of the bad weather and tornadoes originate in my part of the state. Since I travel a lot, I also have a CB. It's not really for talking as much as it is for listening to the truckers. They do talk a lot amongst themselves and pass along local happenings on the roads.

There are radios that can cover multiple bands for your vehicle, but they are very expensive. Then there is the legality side. You can get a Ranger 2950 can operate on 10 and 12 meters, both ham bands, but can be modified to operate on 11 meters, the cb bands, but it is illegal to do so. The 10 and 12 m bands aren't used that much anyways, so it's probably best to just get a cheap cb to monitor the truckers.

www.qrz.com lots of info there
www.eham.net another forum with lots of reviews of every type of ham equipment made

study the radios, watch the forum classifieds and search ebay as well. I have purchased 2 radios from ebay, and my HF base radio off of craigslist. Just be smart about it. I only purchased from hams who gave their call sign so I could look them up on qrz.com

Well folks, I ordered the Boafeng UV-5R Plus. Under $50 shipped from Amazon next day with Prime. I realize this is a cheapo but it was so cheap i could not pass it up.

Thus far, I have only been able to hear static on most channels. 161.700 had the CBS evening news on and 162.400 has the weather loud and clear! Not sure wether I can reach the local repeaters in OKC or Edmond just yet. Remains to be seen whether the radio is decent or not but it was rated highly. So, I imagine I just type in the local repeater number? There may well just be nobody on. Oh well. Just wanted to share.

CB still to come. :)

Well I appreciate your research because after you posted this the other day I decided to purchase this one as well. Mine still hasn't come in, but hopefully it will be worth it when it does.

If you didn't order the programming cable with the radio, you're just in for tears. The Chingrish manual will frustrate you in trying to program the offsets and tone codes for the repeaters. Get the cable...there are free programs on the web to enter the frequencies into the radio.

Have cable. Will try to get the program working. I loaded it but it won't run for some reason. Looking through some bug fixes on the yahoo forum for this model.

Was able to get the software running and linked up just fine after visiting the page setup for this radio found here: http://miklor-uv5r.99k.org/

I am currently listening to the local repeater Net hosted on 146.925! Let me just say that this is cool! :) The wife thinks I am odd but I think this thing is awesome! No idea how well this thing transmits but it seems to receive that repeater just fine! So, here I sit enjoying a beer and listening in on my first "Net". I want to thank AE5C for the invite!

Glad to hear of your success on programming and being able to monitor the net. I'll have to check out that website.
