Another good safety razor for starters is the Muhle R89/Edwin Jagger DE89. I use one every day, usually with Feather blades. I also like Shark, Astra, and today I tried a Gillette 7 O'Clock yellow, with good results.

The Art of Shaving has decent stuff, but way overpriced. Go check out http://www.badgerandblade.com/ for more than you ever wanted to know.

I have a merkur 20c and it's great I prefer the crystal super + razors as the feathers were too thin and mangled my face, as for soap I use trufitt and hill I wish I got a creamier lather out of it but it's not that bad. If you make it to okc swing by carwins shave shop on Classen curve they are awesome. I bought my initial stuff from them and when I ran out of the razors I got from them I bought a sample pack from west cost something web site, found the ones I liked the best and bought the rest from Amazon so I could stock up for cheap.

I do that all the time so it's fine haha. I will vouch for carwins that place is neat, my problem is I don't feel comfortable in stores in that area because I feel "low class" when I'm in there. It's not because of the people they are welcoming and very helpful, it's the stores location and it's a really nice store it felt kind of like a crystal shop if you touch it it will break. Take that as how I felt in the store. The razors, brushes and stands seamed reasonable but the blades, soaps, and creams were a tad on the high side (pack of razors was $8-10 if I remeber) but it was nice holding the razor before buying. There is an art of shaving store in penn square mall that made me feel the same way about the store but their prices were astronomical and he employees were snobby and not helpful, I thought the store in Classen curve would be like that not the mall.

Give the T&H cream a shot. Their soaps never lathered worth a damn for me, but their creams are top notch. You can get their creams in the same scents and they are much more slippery and provide a better cushion.

The shave shop will get another thumbs up from me. They also have free straight razor classes.

So I thought I would add to this thread. Based on what I read here, I jumped on the Harry's wagon. Got the blades early December, and felt like they were really decent for the price. Bought my Sons, and SIL sets as stocking stuffers for Christmas.

Fast forward to last Sunday, I had installed a new blade head earlier in the week and had completed several shaves with no issues. Sunday I was shaving(in the shower like I always do). Hit my neck and cheeks just fine, got to my chin and came across my chin(like I always do) and the razor bit me! I thought it was user error so I made another pass and it did it again! So as I’m bleeding profusely I’m thinking “OK so I did that wrong, it’s my fault”. And I go back to cleaning up my cheeks and neck with up and down strokes, and the razor continues to bite me! So I stopped using the razor, got out of the shower bleeding everywhere, administer first aid and am shocked what I have done to myself. I’ve spent the week in front of Customers looking like I’ve been beat up with dime sized scabs on my chin and cheek. I take care of the razors, use the protective cover, but it looks like somehow the blades are “tweaked” on the razor head I have. Not sure if this is an issue you guys have had but wanted to make you aware. It’s going to take a lot of nerve for me to ever use a Harry’s razor again as the effects of my last shave with one were not pleasant.

I sent the issue to Katie, my personal assistant at Harry's(that's what her email to me said). Although it took Katie almost a week to get back to me, and it was Alex, not Katie, I felt that perhaps I didn't really have a personal assistant... :)

Alex offered to refund the price of the blade, and send me 16 blades, and attached to the email was a nice release that indicated if I took the refund I wouldn't hold them liable for anything...

So while I never intended any litigation, I also didn't intend to agree to their release. And I have no confidence in the product so the free blades aren't of any use either. I do appreciate they made some effort to make it right though.

So if you are a Harry's user, beware, you might have a blade waiting to take some good hunks of skin off of your face.

I use a Gillette fusion proglide. It's the only razor I have ever used that didn't tear me up. I shave every single day so I use a lot of razors. I haven't tried a safety razor because it would cut the crap out of my neck and chin area. I don't want that. Plus I shave against the grain on my face and chin and jaw area. What I have found that has made a world of difference for me is Creamo shave cream. It is the absolute best thing I have ever tried shaving with. You only need a small drop and it last forever as long as you keep adding water. The bottle lasts me for a very long time. I would suggest giving it a shot. I guarantee you won't regret it.

glad you found something that works, but i'm curious why you think (or know) that a safety razor would cut the 'crap out of your neck and chin area'?

I'd suggest that any bad experience or fear is related to 1) not having the right combo or razor and blade and 2) poor technique.

Also, as you mentioned, proper prep is everything in terms of the quality of shave.

I have to use a plastic razor when i travel and it's awful. My double edged razor and feather blade leave me smooth as can be (and for roughly ~$.50 per blade IIRC)
