Years ago, my mother's hearing was so bad that her neighbors could hear the audio from her TV as she watched shows and movies. We got her a listening aid that basically just amplified the sound for her to hear in earphones. That convinced her to buy hearing aids.
The next time we visited, she wasn't wearing them, so I asked if they were a problem. She explained that she got irritated at having to hear faucets dripping and that the toilet flushing was absolutely horrible to her.
So, WE adapted instead of her.
