Look at bttm of grip an should be there. Also cylinder, bttm of barrel, and on frame where crane contacts. V(victory) models start at sn1 million. Before that they were lend lease. SW had contract with England to build a machine gun and took a large advance To design it. Design didn't get accepted so sw was left on the hook for the money. To keep from going bankrupt they agreed to build std m&p revolvers in 38/200 for British. When us entered the war they built the same for us but in 38special. If yours is a wartime remake look closely at butt for a place where lanyard ring was cut and filled..also tons of these were converted to 38 special after the war by simply boring the cylinder. But since 38 sw is larger diameter they will bulge special cases when fired. Note .. SW was making mp revolvers in 38 special before the war for civilians and for years after they exact gun is today's model 10 . because it is chrome doesn't mean it was a Redone war gun it could have been a pre or postwar presentation gun or something also.

Likely a Model 1905 (pre-Model 10) M&P. Unless it has a "V" in front of the serial number, then it's a Victory Model. Most lend-lease have "Property of the United States" stamped on them.

Having someone's name stamped on it makes me think it was a presentation gift or a security/railroad guard's weapon during WWII.

I had a Victory model about like it, but with a 2" barrel. A detective with the military police was given it when he retired. His name was on it, kind like yours. They were in 38 S&W or 38 special.

To my understanding there were no factory Nickel plated models. Here is one of my victory models. I agree with

Model 1905s were either factory blued or nickeled. A factory nickel still used a case-colored hammer and trigger. Most aftermarket buffed off the case-color and nickeled the hammer and trigger as well.
