Aviator41's comment about using a camera with an external flash that can be "bounced off of the ceiling" is a good idea, however, be aware of one VERY IMPORTANT caution. If the ceiling (or any plane that the flash will be directed at) is not white, your bounced flash will be the color of the ceiling, or that other plane that is bounced from.
One solution to that is the "bounce card," like the LADIG "Wacky Hacks Bounce Card," available at http://www.wackyhacks.com/?p=106 .

One trick i saw for getting a softer flash if you have a pop-up flash is to find an old white 35mm film canister. You cut a slot in the side so it can slide over your popped up flash. Softens the lite burst a lot, or so I'm told.

I am not very skilled, but I find a free post processing program to help a lot. I use several, but the most user friendly is Photoscape. You can apply "Auto Level", "Auto Contrast", Sharpen, and Backlight and work wonders.

Here are a few that I took and post processed this weekend. The bottom of each picture is the before and the top is after I applied the above changes in Photoscape.
