How would you deal with this?

I'd take a shower and go to work. I had to give my Blackberry up for a classified briefing this afternoon. I started to hand the intel guy a $20. He asked me what that was for. I told him he could keep it if the phone got "lost".

Think I'd just head to my local bar and play some tunes for the folks. That's exactly what I did during the ice storm, except I had to go downtown to find a place with power.

Tomorrow morning when you wake up all phones are dead. No land lines no cell phone no way to comunicate at all other than yelling down the street or mailing a letter?


Just asking, myself I dont even have a cell phone.

I'd probably end up with quite a bit of OT.

Seriously though pretty unlikely scenario.
For your local line to be dead a whole string of very bad things would have to happen. At that point not being able to call for pizza would be the least of your worries.

For your local land line service to go dead for the entire area would require one or more of the following:

catastrophic damage to your local phone switch- fire, explosion, vandalism, EMP.

Extended loss of commercial power followed by either a failure of the back-up generator or exhaustion of fuel for generator followed by draining the reserve batteries. The offices I cover went for well over a week in some cases when we lost commercial AC during the last ice storm.

More likely an area would be isolated, meaning you could make local calls (your prefix or local prefixes) but couldn't call to the next town.


Plain old telephone service is pretty robust, cell service is a little more finicky. Rural areas served by repeatered service is also a little more vulnerable.

I would enjoy a little piece and quiet, unfortunately it probably would not last long enough.

I would thoroughly enjoy driving on the highway, since there would hardly be anyone else on the road. Most of the other drivers would be stranded in their driveways, unable to move without a working cell phone.
