It's a good idea. Really - if the folks you are taking to the range have some sense, they may just be ignorant. (we all were at one time, right?) If you can show them that guns aren't so scary, that marksmanship takes discipline and practice, it'll open their eyes some. And the next lib/conserv question will get more serious contemplation, because they've been made aware of their wrong assumptions before. At least that's the hope.

Since you're in Edmond, run up to Heartland. Not that most other ranges don't do this, but they rent guns for $10 a pop.

I've shared this story several times here, but Take-a-Lib Shooting Day actually works. My wife was, well is, lib -- "Four more years!" and all that, and she had never fired a gun before and her and her dad (who doesn't share the views of his daughter) took me shooting for my birthday a couple of years ago. She shot his S&W M&P .40 and my 1911 .45. She handled both like a pro, nailed 4-5" grouping at 7-10 yards. Her dad and I kept complimenting her shooting, because it was pretty impressive grouping for a first-timer, and she started to enjoy it.

After that trip, she mentioned many times how she wants to go back, how she'd consider a gun of her own and even getting more skilled and confident and obtaining her own SDA license. She's purchased the majority of the Groupon and Living Social deals for Heartland (lane rental, gun rental, and 50 rounds of ammo for like $15) since then for the two of us.

Now, she still has a lot of room to go, but she no longer believes that guys only own guns in order to compensate for uh.. natural shortcomings.
