I have a bone-stock '99 Wrangler SE, 4 cyl., 5 spd manual trans. I bought it a few years ago to replace a motorcyle when my back got bad. It serves it's intended purpose. Top down in the summer, cruising the local lakes, etc. I live in a small town so around town driving is a slow speeds. I seldom drive it out on the highway. As others have said, on the highway it sucks pretty bad. 60 mph against a good wind is about it. I average about 15 mpg in town and 18 on the highway. Last winter, we had about a foot of snow accumulated on the side roads and it had a hard time with that. Actually ground to a halt on a major city road by running into a drift that I thought I could get through. My Jeep has almost 150,000 miles on it without any major work. I'll get rid of it soon, and there's no doubt that my next one will be a 6 cylinder. I'll probably stick with the manual trans just because I like the control you have.

Its really just the Dana 35 you gotta watch. Unfortunately after 90 that was the most common rear axle. You can still do alot with them if you don't thrash them constantly. Saharas, unlimiteds and rubis were avaible or came stock with Dana 44s.

And if it has a 35, you can get a Super 35 kit as well, though that's more money than swapping in a Chrysler 8.25 or a D44. You could go really big and stick a built 8.8 or 9 in there, or D60 or larger. Not with a 4 banger though :)

I got the '91 4cyl. If I buy another one, deff go with the straight 6. Less to complain about.

Hiding from all you crazy people!!!
Get a 4 and swap in an LS1

Other than just buying a good running 4.0, this is the best advice on here... Kind of
If your gonna buy a 4 cylinder then buy one that's blown up and swap it out for a Votec 5.3
The 5.3 T350 combo is a super simple swap plus you can find a sweet running 5.3 without a lot of miles for a few hundred bucks. The T350 is a dime a dozen....
Other than that, get a 6 cylinder!!! The 4 cylinders are straight up dogs no matter how you look at them.
