Whichever you go with, (L-6 definitely) I can assure you that it will consume you worse than shooting sports. Plus you have a whole rear window to put all those cool gun stickers.

Thanks for all the replies, have found quite a few 4 cyl jeeps for sale, the 6cyl in my price range seem a little scarce.

If you want to keep it fairly stock and are not commuting to/from Tulsa or Dallas every week (so staying off long, open highway runs) you will be fine, honestly. I'd prefer a 6 but I would rather take a 4 that I can afford versus not having a Jeep at all.

If you wanted to go taller, you could maybe run up to 30" with no lift, even 31" tires would fit stock though it'd help to throw on a 2" lift (Springs or spacers, springs preferred). That would probably max out the 4 cylinder. Honestly, I could take a cheap, basic 4 banger SE and put some 2" coil spacers on it, cram some 33x9.5 BF Goodrich AT tires on there, trim where it rubs, and be quite happy (though technically that would be a DOG with the 4 cylinder but I could live with it, though I can't recommend it) :D

The bigger thing I would look for is hard full doors with a soft top. I like the soft top in a Wrangler, so it is easier to fold down or remove compared to a hard top. You can always just take the doors completely off in nice weather. But come winter, the hard doors are really nice, mainly because they have real windows.

I agree with this except I like the half hard doors better. Just a personal preference but I've never had to drive a wrangler daily in winter.

i wouldn't get a 4cylinder if I could help it. You'll always wish you got the 6. And it's not an easy swap to the 6. Everything is too weak. Also The hard doors and top are definitely good to find! IF you find a pair of hard doors, they are 700-1000 then you have to paint them usually. Also the tops regularly go for 2k. I'm talking about a TJ, YJ doors and tops are considerably cheaper. If you get a 4cyl with the idea of swapping to an ls then you would have to change the transmission, transfer case, and axles since nothing will hold up to a stock v8 for long.

I've driven a tj for 5 years with a softtop and half doors. Not bad, but you will eventually have someone cut your windows... I didn't think it would happen to me but it did last year.
