How about folks just keep their dogs fenced in, see no more problems, wow, who would have thought it.
Any dog can make an escape, but I don't understand owners who will just let their dogs roam freely when they can get into trouble. Years ago, I used to let my dogs roam, but at that time the only potential trouble was the 50mph traffic on the section road along my frontage--they could pretty much roam the whole section without running into livestock or people they didn't know. Now that I have more neighbors, including rural neighborhoods of McMansions, and neighbors with more livestock, my dog never gets to roam freely (unless she pulls her Houdini act).

My neighbors to the north (whom I don't know--they live behind a closed gate) keep goats and a couple of horses; if my dog went there, she'd certainly want to play with them, and the neighbors would certainly be within their rights to shoot her. I wouldn't be happy about it, but I would understand if they did, so when she's outside, she's either on an aerial run or on a leash with me. It's just part of my responsibility as her master to keep her safe...

I hope I don't run into those two in the middle of the night! ;)

Well I see this thread has taken the traditional OSA turn ...

Are you talkin' bout my fishheads? I'm telling you what, those catfish don't even stop the car when they roll by my place... it WORKS! Crows picked out the eyeballs lickety split but I put some glass marbles in place and now they really look menacing.

Speaking of which, I've solved my garden thieving issue by mounting a stuffed lion head outside the cabin door. Before, lions would waltz right up with a basket like they owned the place and collect up all sorts of greens and veggies. One of them, whom I heard the others call Roy, even had the nerve to go down into the root cellar and take a few jars of canned peaches. Ever since I decorated the porch with their friend though, they've steered clear. I just hope they don't get the balls to arm themselves and come back for a fight.

I have a stray dog graveyard/boneyard out back. I give them several chances to get lost but they always seem to want to chase my horse and eat my dogs food. I have called the sheriff on many occasions, they always just tell me to shoot it if its chasing my horse or inflicting other damage to my property.

It is what it is. I try to keep a yard dog around, like a healer, to keep the coyotes run off, but if they go to the neighbor's place and cause issues, they get what they get.

I've had neighbors in the past that would keep 7-8 strays around all the time, an I didn't mind feeding them from time to time, but they had 2 or 3 that would run in an aggressive pack, chase the horses, and sent my old decrepit healer to the vet 3 times and almost killed him in front of me once out on my deck. I visited with them and told them they had 3 strikes when they refused to pay the last $500 vet bill & they were out of chances. They chose not to do anything, so I did it for them. I didn't like it, but felt as if I had no other choice, and handled it without much remorse.

Strays are welcome at my place, as long as they mind their manners. They always will be. Its my opinion that if you kill a dog for no more than passing thru, or taking a dump in the yard, you're a rotten bastard. Your opinion may differ, and you're sure welcome to it, but my opinion isn't likely to change.
