Seekins bottom metal.

Is that a billet mag? I have to know how you like that thing - please post a range report with detailed pics - I've been holding off of bottom metal specifically because of wanting Seekins instead of the standard CDI/Badger/AI style mags but I didn't want to pigeon-hole myself into having proprietary mags.

I have to say though, that looks absolutely awesome man.

The magazines are stamped steel from what I can tell. The bottom metal is aluminum. You might want to contact Glen on the particulars. The bottom metal is very nice; but I'm not so crazy on the amount of movement on the magazines. I did need to open up the mag lips just a bit to make the bolt catch the rim better. I have a similar set-up on my .338 Edge. I would look at the Surgeon bottom metal too. There actually are several companies offering a detachable mag set-up. I just ordered bottom metal for my Sako TRG-S from McMillan, I would like to retain the factory DBM when I build that rifle up.

I have never done a lot of shooting over a couple hundred yards. Do these high dollar bolt actions with top of the line scopes make the long stuff (500+). relatively easy?

In short - no. They certainly make it easier than if you didn't have some of the goodies, but they're definitely not all necessary (look at the snipers and competitors of old). Quite a bit of skill is still necessary even with the nicest of equipment.

I know I already posted it in the "Son of a" thread, but I thought I'd keep this one alive since its several pages deep. Here's my son's project rifle.

Started out as this:

Ended up as this (its the unfinished one - the green one is mine):

Wow, I just saw QTRMOA's pics back on page 16, any ONE of which would be enough from keeping my from posting my *ahem* supposed 'precision rifles'.
Unbelievable; best collection I've ever laid eyes on, by far, and a man after my own heart (with a much larger wallet).

So,

-- and that's all I have to say 'bout that. [/gump]

:D

We should start a poor-man's version of this thread, where Savage is top of the line, lol.

Oh yeah, danielh (and everyone else) - if you haven't yet seen the movie "Smokin' Aces", go rent it - it's a bit cheesy but not a half bad movie, and the one scene of the chick shooting the Barrett 82 from building to building is worth the price of admission.

Oh, and awesome thread.
