A little over three years ago, Mrs GED and I bought a house out in the sticks. Now I'm not really a pet kinda guy, but knowing how mice, rats and snakes love the great outdoors, I recruited my oldest daughter to pick me up a couple of cats for the simple purpose of keeping these critters away. You know how folks are always giving away free kittens in the Wal-Mart parking lot and such, so I told her if she ever seen somebody doing this to snag me one or two...males preferrably.

Well, a coupla weeks later she shows up with a full grown cat. She said there were some people giving kittens away but they just gave away the last one. They then told my daughter that she could have the momma cat if she wanted it, so she took her.

I'm against animals in the house, but since this ol' gal was a house cat all her life, I thought I'd let her in the laundry room for a few days to get used to the place. She was already litter box trained and just a good ol' cat. After about a week I turned her loose outside and she took to that like a duck to water.

Then a few months later, like kitty kats do :rolleyes2 she wound up with a belly full of babies. She delivered three kittens - 2 male, 1 female a week after my birthday last year. I gave away the white male and white female that both looked just like her but I kept the black male with white feet (I call him boots) simply because I had one that looked just like him when I was a kid.

Anyway, two or three days ago, she got into a scrap with another cat or some kind of critter and he/she/it tore her up pretty bad. I reckon that and the heat finally got to her, because I found her this morning belly up.

I miss her. :cry3:

So sorry to hear this, it is amazing how quickly they become more than just a pet. Lost my dog last year, not sure there are words that can comfort you for your loss, I'll include you in my prayers.

That hurts. My wife's cats lived to very, very old ages. It hurt to put them down. I had to put my dog/best friend down this year. I hate that you did not have a choice.

Thanks Hoov and everybody else for your kind words.

I'm actually kinda beating myself up over this because I keep thinking that maybe I shoulda took her to the vet after she got ruffed up the other day. But ya know, this wasn't the first time that's happened and she always bounced back after a couple of days or so.

It musta been the damned heat that got her.

That sucks, sorry to hear. Lost a couple close dogs along the way, and it sucks for a long time! You can get really attached to these sweet animals that love you unconditionally. My thoughts are with you.
