I give up. I used to be a collector of Garands. This one stumps me. It is also a 5 digit serial number. It is not a reweld or Beretta. Ant idea of what this is and any story behind it?

what caliber is it?

IIRC Italy did there own version of the M1 Garand/M14 mix.

There are also conversions here in the US that are done

Receiver looks USGI. 1942. It’s been re-parked.
There were conversions years ago by private individuals to accept BAR mags. Don’t know if there were kits you could buy for the conversions.

An interesting M1 with what looks like a BAR magazine conversion. Looks like a T20 M1 Garand.
