So since women aren't allowed to serve in front line combat positions, can a male soldier, when ordered into a combat zone he doesn't want to go to, declare to his superior officer that they are self-identifying as a female that day and not have to go?

Yes they are and do serve in front line positions for a number of years. Also we have a trans DS here at Fort Sill now.
