Yeah I just saw the actual video of it. Dumb. Sure it looks gun-ish, but anybody and everybody remotely connected with the kid/ school/ deafness would see that is a sign and at the very least, is about hunting. Not mowing down the 5th grade bully. That's as bad about sticking to school policies as not letting a kid wear a Michigan shirt.

I honestly understand the school's point of view. Not saying I agree, just understand. I am a teacher of deaf children actually, and can see how it could cause a stir, especially if the student goes to a regular school. If he is at Nebraska school for the deaf, it's a different story. If one of my kids were to have a name sign like that I could see multiple students going home to tell their parents some kid was pretending to shoot him or something and you'd get some wack-a-doo parent complaining to the school all the time and it'd be a big headache. Just easier to ask them to change his name sign (from the school's point of view).

The flip side of the coin is society is so p.c. that we can't let boys play guns at school anymore or be boys. People need to get their panties out of a wad and relax some. But for the school system trying to protect themselves, I understand the reason behind asking. I think we are neutering society, and specifically boys and it is sickening.

But ultimately, it is the kid's name is my thought. It is something uniquely his and I get him wanting to keep that, and the deaf society would definitely stand behind that. I think my name sign is pretty cool and wouldn't want to change it. I'm just glad the parents are aware and involved. It is shocking how uninvolved many of the parents can be to their child who has special circumstances involving their education.... How many parents don't know sign language, let alone what a name sign is. I ask if their kid has a name sign already and they say, "a name what? no, what is that"..... "oh! that's pretty cool!" or "no they don't have one. Where can I get one?" (I've always wanted to say, "you can get one at the deaf counter in Wal-Mart. They are $12.95")

Here's a novel idea. They're supposed to be "educators", right? How about they "educate" the rest of the students on deafness and sign language, and have the other kids understand that Hunter isn't making a finger gun, but signing his name?

If the "educators" are too stupid to accomplish this, how the hell are they going to be smart enough to "educate" any student? :preocc:

Well I have 2 thoughts on that. 1. It wouldn't be hard to figure out that one sign for the teachers and tell their students, but as is the case with my school, most the teachers don't know sign language at all. Again, not saying they couldn't learn 1 measly sign, but initially, the teachers may not know anything about sign language either. Secondly, kids are morons. There are a lot of kids that don't know jack, and wouldn't pay attention enough to remember what the teachers said. We had a girl at our school that pee'd on herself Monday because she didn't go to the restroom any of the times she had available and never told the teacher until it was WAY too late to get her to the restroom. Mom came up real mad at the teacher. The girl thought it was funny so she pee'd on herself again yesterday on purpose. Kids are different.

All that said, I'm still in agreement it is a big over reaction on the school's part, just that I can see their reasoning for what the did.

Who cares if a kid does pretend to shoot with his/her finger? That's something I did as kids all the time. This PC Zero Tolerance crap has got to stop. This is like the kids a few years ago that got suspended for pointing a fish stick at another kid and said, "Bang!". Anytime you have liberal-minded people in charge of anything, this is what you get.
