Like most of us, I really thought these things happen to “other people”. On a quiet morning this past Labor Day, things changed forever in an instant.

Here is the video of my house and everything in it burning

The reason I am writing this post is to bring attention to the reality of these situations, and I hope that my experience can help someone else “be prepared”

The “Go Bag”- I wish I had made a serious one (not just a sort of kinda one that I had lying around somewhere) If I did, i would know from that day what I needed to pack it with:
Extra Meds (squirrel away a few pills a month and soon you will have a nice supply)
Extra Phone (a GO! phone or something like this http://spareone.com/spareone/spareone-emergency-phone)
Copy of contact phone numbers
Clothes for a few days/ toothbrush
Copy of a CC statement (top portion) with CC number and phone number of CC company on it
Copy of DL/passport/birth certificate
Copy of SDA card
Extra pair of old glasses/contacts
old shoes/sneakers

Ladder for a 2-story home (I had one)

Water hose is best used for wetting downwind neighbors house. It is totally useless on a raging house fire.

Bruce Willis is in the movies. My neighbor and I tried to go back in and retrieve my wife’s purse when the smoke was coming out the front door. We made it 2 steps in then reality hit.

It CAN happen to you....

That really sux. Sorry to hear about your loss. At least you got out. Fires are very devastating and preparedness is more than a state of mind. Total preparedness for something like a house fire is hard to achieve IMO.
Hope you have good insurance. Any idea how it started?

Wow! Very sorry to hear... hope that woman who caused it gets the book thrown at her.

So far charged with fleeing the scene of an accident...doesn't sound like it to me.

Good on ya for not putting your mugs on camera. The lady drove about 3 football fields before hitting your house, she had to be high. And on dust remover? Really??? She drives a BMW and couldn't even put together the funds for cocaine? Sheesh, whats the world coming to.

Talking about preparedness I met a guy today who has a Faraday cage built in the back of his truck with a spare starter in it...
