So I finished the front porch and needed a new project. I have about 350 board feet of 1/4 sawn white oak that has been air drying for almost 2 years courtesy of the ice storm 2007 and decided it is time to start using some of it.

We have been looking for a new front door and I couldn't find anything I liked in my price range so,,,,,I decided to build my own.

I'm still fitting the mortise and tenons for a nice tight fit, and still need to glue up the panels for the raised panels, and order the fluted glass. I also have some decent sized scraps that I plan to do some ballistic testing on to see what a 1 3/4" oak door will stand up to.

I have the mortise and tenons close enough that I could mock up the frame:

All of the pieces laid out:

The mortise and tenon work, rough in by machine and finish out by hand:

I hope you sharpen those chisels before using them!

Looks good buddy, when you get done you are more than welcome to come do several projects at my house.

Would you say you enjoy working with wood? J/K

Looks good SS. I love wood working projects. Nothing like being out in the garage/shop with the smell of sawdust in the air and the feel of it under your feet.

That looks great, how do you plan on holding it all together? I've always wanted to build something the old way, with the tapered pegs instead of nails or screws.

I'm going to cheat... :)

The weight of the large panels will stress the m+t joint far beyond what I think glue will hold. Just the frame alone is already heavy. I plan to use 2 screws from the edge of the door into each tenon and plug the holes with a nice oak plug, or possibly a walnut plug. This will insure a good mechanical connection coupled with the m+t and glue should be rock solid.

I'm also thinking about using some walnut accent strips in the raised panel glue ups but haven't really decided yet.

My current door has 3 ball bearing hinges, I may have to go to 4 for this beast.
