My wife wants a new knife set for the kitchen. In the last 5 years or so we've had 2 that really didn't hold up and we wernt impressed with. I'm looking for any help or suggestions on a good knife set or atleast a brand. Something with scizzors is a bonus also, she wants them too. I want quality, if I can find something local great but I don't mind Internet shopping either. I've done several searches but I like word of mouth. So please share any good sets you guys have bought and where they came from. Thanks for your help guys...

Shun knives are hard to beat for kitchen work. They are basically mini katanas, and they are forged in Japan. This are their entry level 6 piece set, and they are unbelievable. They also have larger piece sets on Amazon.

If you don't want to spend quite that much these sets look to be pretty good. But I don't have any personally experience with them.

I like my Henckels, had them a while, use them a lot, have held up well. If you keep your eye out, you can get them on sale like 50% off at Penney's or Kohl's. Just make sure to get the real deal, some of your name-brand knives like slitzer, whustoff etc have some lower end knives made in China for them, with their name.

Henckels makes some lower end stuff too. Stick with their higher end models, like their 5 Star and you'll be happy. I think Shun offers the best value right now though. Great knives. I like the look of their Premier line.

Yeah, they all do, thats why I threw in the etc.

With any knife, make sure you take care of them too, dont throw them in the dishwater, cut cans in half, etc. Even good knives will dull under abuse

Dexter-Russell Sani-Safe knives. Excellent knives for people that actually use them for something other than cabinet decoration. Grainger industrial supply or Cabelas is where i've found them.

+1 for the henckels, but as mentioned make sure you get the higher quality. Look for the forged knives, stay away from the stamped crap. Are you looking for a full set or just a few essential? Shuns just seem like a bit over kill for a home kitchen.
