Sorry, but you're wrong. First, the guy isn't an old man, he's a homeless drug addict. Yep, drug addicts tend to have seizures from time to time. Locals say the dog (Star) has a history of being aggressively protective of the homeless druggie. The officers are doing what they're supposed to do, which is try keep the cluless NYC citizens from making a complete mess of the situation. Stupid woman doesn't listen, gets too close and sets the dog off (barely avoiding a bite wound). Dog whirls and attacks the next closest target (cop). Cop is smart enough to know what kind of damage an aggressive dog can do and defends himself in the only effective way possible, doing a damn good job in the process. Dog howls and sets off the clueless idiots who don't know c'mere from sic'em. Officers know better than to put the dog down (which survives the gunshot wound by the way) and they attempt to establish crowd and scene control (which the NYC idiots resist as much as possible). Officers aren't qualified to perform medical treatment, so they're securing the scene to make it safe for EMT's, who will not enter an unsecure and potentially dangerous scene. 1st rule of emergency response is don't become another victim.

It's sad that the dog had to get shot. I hate seeing stuff like that. However, it was a 100% clean shoot and I don't see how anyone with half a brain could disagree with it. Perhaps you should reconsider your completely emotional response? :(

Ive heard the agressive dog story. I swear I live in a world full of girly men. That dog was a nipper not a biter. If it was it would have been chewing on the woman instead of charging somebody else. Whirling around? Next closest? Um, there were others alot closer than Little boy blue. Heck, was he the one that peppered the dog in the first place? Mabey that played a role in the dog deciding to go that direction? Dogs like that one charge and dont bite unless you turn. Smart enough to know what to do? You mean scared shitless. Looked like he was ready for a shooting match with a hoard of zombies coming. Blahhh. Looked like a cluster puck gone wrong to me.

In another two plus minutes the animal controle officer arrived and this would never have made it to Youtube and been an issue. We cold spin this and say that the officer antaganized the dog further buy spraying an already anxiouse dog thus setting it off. Poor dessisions that affect the publics perception of our law enforcers.

Emotional responce? I know the differance of when and where to be scared and that wasnt one. Any body without a phobia of dogs with half a brain wouldnt have done that and would have known the differance. Clean shot? There was a disregaurd of the back ground and possiblilities of a ricochet. Maybe they dont teach that anymore. Be aware of your back ground. Sooooo, as for reconsidering? Naaaaaah.

Im going to agree to disagree on this one.

Regardless of the situation with the person on the ground or the shooting of the dog by the officer for his protection the only idiots there were the folks in the crowd. The idiotards should have just minded their own business.

Glocktogo, Glock'em down, Saddlebum and others have got it right. You just can't take chances with dogs like Pit Bulls. They can be friendly as a cuddly kitten one moment and ripping your flesh like a rabid mountain lion the next.

A distant relative of mine was about 5 yr old when he was attacked by a 'sweet' pit bull that had never even growled at anyone [according to its owner]. It took close to 1,000 stitches to put the poor kids face, the back of his head and his neck together again....and then there were several plastic surgeries over the next 10 yrs to help get rid of some of the deep scars on his face where the dog's fangs had ripped completely through his cheeks / lips & eye brows. The surgeons had sewed him up fast... like a sack of potatos... in order to try and stop all the blood loss.. and that had left lots of deep thick scars.

After seeing what that kid and others like him have gone through due to dog attacks, if a pit bull ever came up to me and acted the least bit aggressive, I'd put it down without a bit of hesitation. I'd risk going to jail, rather than risk a bite from a pit. Dogs like the one in the video is a reason I have a Crimson Trace laser on my LCP & Glock 23. My town has had a problem with pit bulls running loose for several years. Many have been shot by the police and more have been caught by animal control. At one time there was a $200 fine for selling pit bulls within the city limits. If I'm in my front yard and a pit or a pack of dogs comes up on me in a aggressive manner.. I will use my weapon cuz I will definitely be afraid of suffering severe physical harm or loss of life.

I'll even go on record as saying if ANY dog showed any sign of aggression, and yes, a dog - ANY dog - charging a human being, is a sign of aggression, I'd pop his ass. Whether it was a pit bull, a German shepherd, a poodle - whatever! I don't get paid enough to deal with an attacking dog.

How many of you would do anything differently? Honestly...I really wanna know. :ugh2:

umm ,i aint lettin a dog chew on me for 2 minutes while we wait for animal control.that tough talk might impress the kids at day care, but you don't have to be a girly man to not want to be seriously injured by a dog with the kinda of strength pits possess

When I was 5 I had a friends dog latch onto my face. It was a Britney hunting dog and it was normally friendly but that day he had an issue with me. He came 1 cm from my jugular and ripped the right side of my face half off. To this day I trust NO dog. I have been known to put my size 11 square into the throat of stray dogs that approached me acting less than friendly. I too would have shot that pit with what I have seen on the video.

Sad deal. The dog should've been on the leash. Officer did the right thing.

As far as all "pit bull" comments - some pretty ignorant stuff. Pit bulls are medium sized breed of mild temper. You wanna see "dangerous" breeds? Most Americans have no clue what an aggressive large dog is capable of - look-up Caucasian Sheepdog, Russian Schnauzer, Akita, Bandoggo, Corso - those have strength and agility to take down dangerous game (not a 40lb dog as pitbulls were bread to do) and that handgun wouldn't do jack-**** to a charging 120lb+ dog.
