This is typical behavior of folks today. If the homeless guy woulda jumped up and lunged at the officer with a knife, the crowd would have responded the same way when the officer shot him.

I woulda shot the dog too. Those damned pits are meaner than hell. And yeah, I know, somebody here is gonna defend pits saying that they are oh, so loveable and they are only mean when trained thataway.

********. :disappoin

Whether the cop shoots the dog or ACO shows up and has to wrestle with it, the crowd is gonna be on the dog's side no matter what. Then they woulda jumped on the ACO for hurting that poor dog with his snare and how he should be more gentle with him...the poor little defenseless doggie.

:rolleyes2

Folks despise the police. They always have. Hell, I chewed out a lady just this afternoon for a comment she made to her 4 year old daughter. I was in uniform, standing in line at Wal-Mart, picking up a few things, when this child saw me and said, "look momma - it's the police."

The girls mother looked at me then replied, "yup...you had better behave." I then said, "ma'am, why would you say that to her? We're here to help people, not be the bad guy. That's who we protect you from." The woman then started in with her, "oh, I didn't mean it like that, I just meant..." :blahblah:

Uh-huh... :pissed:

That was uncalled for shooting the dog. At what point did the police attempt to render assistance to the man after they shot the dog? I fast forwarded through it and it didnt seem to much of a pressing point.

It nipped some one? Pit mix? Sounds like BS for a CYA to not seem so much of a pansy. Of course the dog is going to be excited. Its master is hurt or dying, its been pepper sprayed buy the men in black, large croud, yelling and noise. Looks like at 422 the dog catcher shows up. Lil to late. Sorry I have no sympaty for the cop that shot the dog.

Reminds me of a video a few months back when a cop showed up to the wrong address and shot a dudes dog on his own property.

What would you have done if you didnt have a gun? I wouldnt have peppered it and I'd waited for animal controle.

Heck, Barny would have been cleared if he missed and killed a civi. Reclessness abandonment of his surroundings, He wasnt thinking of the public safety or the man on the ground.

A man that scared of a dog brobably has a few tomb stones to his name.

When did anybody lend assistance to the old man? If he was already dead they could have just waited for the dog catcher and avoided this whole thing instead of trying to justify it. I quit watching the vid after the dog catcher showed up after 420ish

Sorry, but you're wrong. First, the guy isn't an old man, he's a homeless drug addict. Yep, drug addicts tend to have seizures from time to time. Locals say the dog (Star) has a history of being aggressively protective of the homeless druggie. The officers are doing what they're supposed to do, which is try keep the cluless NYC citizens from making a complete mess of the situation. Stupid woman doesn't listen, gets too close and sets the dog off (barely avoiding a bite wound). Dog whirls and attacks the next closest target (cop). Cop is smart enough to know what kind of damage an aggressive dog can do and defends himself in the only effective way possible, doing a damn good job in the process. Dog howls and sets off the clueless idiots who don't know c'mere from sic'em. Officers know better than to put the dog down (which survives the gunshot wound by the way) and they attempt to establish crowd and scene control (which the NYC idiots resist as much as possible). Officers aren't qualified to perform medical treatment, so they're securing the scene to make it safe for EMT's, who will not enter an unsecure and potentially dangerous scene. 1st rule of emergency response is don't become another victim.

It's sad that the dog had to get shot. I hate seeing stuff like that. However, it was a 100% clean shoot and I don't see how anyone with half a brain could disagree with it. Perhaps you should reconsider your completely emotional response? :(

My issue is that they did not finish the animal off immediately, that was a bit cruel. Other than that the shoot was righteous.

Yes pit bulls are a great breed they are actually quite kind, loving, and loyal and yet maligned because of what they have the potential to do when untrained and unsupervised. We learned that one the hard way. 6 weeks post surgery one of my cats is probably going to have an amputation done because there has been no bone regrowth in the 3 tarsals we had to have pinned when in a moment of excitement our pit bull used him as a play toy.

We don't know the dog we don't know what happened prior to where the video starts and when t comes down between a human and animal the animals gonna lose.

That could have been a border collie, lab, Australian Shepard, rhodesian ridgeback, or any number of other breeds and the situation would have likely ended the same way.

There are no bad breeds just bad owners and a homeless junkie has no business having a damn dog of any breed.

fyi Watching the whole video it appeared the dog got up after being put on a rabies pole and this was at the bottom of the article posted below the video.

Remarkably, both Stankiewicz and Star survived. Star remains in the care of the Animal Care & Control in NYC, said the East Village Local, but there also seems to be some discrepancy on how the dog is doing. According to Animal Control, the pit bull is stable, but the police source said that Star's outcome "didn't look very optimistic."

It would've torn me up as well, but the danger had passed and I'm sure Dept. policy would be against doing the humane thing. FWIW, the dog survived.

For the love of god put the damn thing out of it's misery. That pisses me off not them actually shooting it in the first place. What made the situation worse is that they let it writhe in pain there in front of all these people.

EDIT: OK OK the dog lived and I agree the department probably had policy about shooting to be humane in the middle of the city. Sketchy situation though, all those people around and shooting into the pavement. Do not envy decision makers there. It looked like the officer who fired wasn't even the one the dog was coming after but the guy to the right.
