The majority people that guess scores on the internet are just blindly guessing, but if you look at each point and estimate length and mass, it’s very possible to get close to a real score. It’s not a fast process (at least not for me).
My veterinarian sent me a picture of a buck a couple weeks ago that he killed and asked what I thought it scored, and I did the math and told him 148”. He texted me a few days ago, and his taxidermist scored it at 147 1/8”. He said people had guess it up to 160”, and I was the closest. He was happy, because he thought it was only about 130”.
Most hunters can't count off an accurate hundred yards without a tape or a laser range finder. Your account proves that those who said they shot a 160 probably shot a 140.

I’ve hurt a few friend’s feelings by actually doing the math on “160 class” bucks they’ve had on camera, because most of them wouldn’t make 140”.🤣
It takes ALOT of bone to get a buck to 160, 170, or 180 inches.

I went 9 years at one time without taking a buck because nothing showed up bigger than the last one I killed.
That is your choice but I think going nine years without a buck waiting for the next "big one" is not what I would do. I do pass on little bucks but will not go almost a decade waiting on "the one".

As I also stated before, shoot what you want, I could care less.

In my opinion, you shouldn’t need the 140 or 150” rule if just shooting mature bucks is your goal. Rack size should be irrelevant as long as he’s mature.
My neighbor and I had an informal agreement to only shoot mature bucks, but it went to crap in 2019 when he shot a 160 class 4 year old that my son and I both passed to let grow. At that point, I realized that being able to say he killed a buck every year is more important than game management.
I started deer hunting in Oklahoma in 2003 but didn’t kill a buck in 2006, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2018, and 2023.
Yeah we just use it kind of as a general guideline, Ill take a big bodied bully any day if he's mature, I think once a person realizes what a mature deer is ya really don't have to try and put an inch rule in play we just have it kind of like a speed limit sign out in the desert. I've had years where I didn't kill a buck either because I never saw one I was after or what I was seeing were all young guys. I have also had 6 at the backwoods hunting shows over the years and this year I will have my seventh there and he's just a 162" but just an fyi a rush job at the taxidermy is $$$$ lol!
