Anyone who knows Rep. Wesselhoft, please urge him to also introduce legislation similar to what Montana passed in an attempt to exempt citizens from the federal gun free school zones act of 1995. It is currently a federal felony for anyone to carry within 1000 feet of any K-12 school unless they have a carry permit physically issued by the State in which the school is in. If Oklahoma passes unlicensed open carry, those without Oklahoma carry licenses would be forced to stay more than 1000 feet away from the property line of all schools, or risk 5 years in federal prison and the permanent loss of their gun rights. The vast number of schools in developed areas make it nearly impossible for an unlicensed carrier to travel any distance without being in violation.
Montana's Law:
45-8-360. Establishment of individual licensure. In consideration that the right to keep
and bear arms is protected and reserved to the people in Article II, section 12, of the
Montana constitution, a person who has not been convicted of a violent, felony crime and
who is lawfully able to own or to possess a firearm under the Montana constitution is
considered to be individually licensed and verified by the state of Montana within the
meaning of the provisions regarding individual licensure and verification in the federal
Gun-Free School Zones Act.
