I don't care one way or the other about open carry. I don't think I would do it, but I don't care if someone else does.

What I do think is the state has bigger problems we should be tackling other than this...

Exactly.

And more importantly HB1796 is not JUST Open Carry. At first glance it is, but what some don't realize is that it is A BILL TO CREATE A HANDGUN LICENSE! Read the bill in its entirety. Do you want to have a license to exercise your 2A rights? This bill is a bad idea

Remember, before the government can control something, they first have to make it illegal.

Pay attention when you vote !

Here is an example of a global change that is made throughout the SDA:

"a person possessing a valid [deleted]concealed[deleted] handgun license pursuant to the provisions of the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act"

If this language would have been in the original SDA back in 96(?) we would have all thrown a fit but now everyone thinks its a good thing because "now we get to open carry" [with a license]?

The issue with it going to the ballot is that it has a 97.81%* chance to fail. At that point, legislators won't touch it again "because we let you decide".

A legislature sending legislation to a ballot for popular vote is nothing more than playing a political shell game by shirking their duty as elected officials.

Isn't this the one that allows CCW holders to open carry?

Yes it is and it is a BAD bill. Here is an example of a global change that is made throughout the SDA:

Sounds like handgun licensing is not that far away, huh? If this language would have been in the original SDA back in 96(?) we would have all thrown a fit but now everyone thinks its a good thing because "now we get to open carry" [with a license]?

First of all, it hasn't passed the House, Senate, or Governor's desk yet, just the House Public Safety Committee.

As I said in the other thread, this is the bill that puts open carry on the ballot. That's a bad idea.

The only reason that Tibbs et al are pushing for it to be a ballot issue is that they know it will fail. We can't even get half of the "pro-2A" crowd to agree on open carry, what makes you think it has a snowball's chance in hell of passing a popular vote? What our fine legislators are doing here is shirking their responsibility to legislate. When open carry fails on the ballot (and it will), your legislator will say "it looks like the people don't want open carry" when approached again about the issue.

This is why I don't think that the legislature should be able to refer a measure to the ballot (other than a Constitutional amendment). The legislature acts as a check on a simple or small majority ruling over the minority. The people act as a check against the legislature through ballot initiatives that can enact or repeal laws in the event that the legislature is controlled by a runaway minority.

The other bill that is very bad happens to be the one that the discharge petition was circulating for: HB1647. OK2A says that it contains open carry language. That language offers a defense to a person arrested for unlawful carry by carrying openly if they can articulate a "reasonable fear of bodily harm". That is far from open carry and far from good for Oklahomans.

Why would you object to having to get a permit to CCW?

There are a lot of folks I don't want carrying guns...of course there are a lot of folks who don't want me carrying guns....ha ha ha

Because my right to self-defense is an inherent right. Not one granted by government.
