Here is a good explanation of it, courtesy of Rob Roy/Liam Neeson:

I really appreciate this explanation from an egoist philosophical standpoint. "It is a man's gift to himself." That's what it's all about.

Ted Kennedy said:
"my honor is loyalty"
Hmm, I think I've heard that somewhere. Catchy phrase! I would agree completely, if by that you mean loyalty to your own highest values.

Our family put down our core values that would be our honor system.
Loving Jesus - Do our thoughts and actions pass this filter
Integrity - Who are you when you think nobody else will know the difference
Family Priority - Family comes first. In all things. Time together, defense and everything between
Effort - Everything you do should be done with true best effort
Respect - The way we treat others should be treating them respectfully. You don't have to respect someone's actions and beliefs to treat them respectfully
Giving - We are blessed only to bless others
Stewardship - Whatever you are blessed with, whether it be money, time or talents, they should not be squandered but fully invested in
Serving - Serve others. Not just yourself.

The first is try and always tell the truth, not always possible, but a goal to aim for. My wife is smarter than me, she says "You have to tell the truth, but you don't have to tell everything you ever knew."

I agree with the above except for the "try". His wife is spot on.

Part of what honor is:

Honor means doing what is right, even when no one is watching and even if it doesn't benefit you.
