I’ve been banking at MidFirst Bank for 20 years now. When Oklahoma first passed the CCW law MidFirst Bank in my area didn’t post anything on their doors. I as I went about my business I didn’t have to worry about carrying in there until one day they put up a “no guns” sign. It really frosted my butt and I spoke with several of the people there and they said it was a corporate decision. In talking with the employees a couple of the ladies that knew me well told me not to worry about it as their husbands didn’t disarm when they were in there. So for the next 10 or so years I kept carrying and not worrying. About 4 years ago they removed the No Guns signs and put a small lettered “no weapons” about ½ down the door. It is barely noticeable so I kept on carrying as usual about it as they all know me by my first name. The manager is a NRA member and they are sponsors the Friends of NRA event every year like me. I don’t want to have to change banks because they have been good to me and my parents also bank there. It’s handy for all of us. The other day I was going in and met one of our local pawn shop owners outside and I said hi to him. I noticed his holster was empty as he carries unconcealed when in the pawn shop. Somehow while talking we came to the subject of the “no weapons” sign on the door and I asked him if he was carrying concealed would he take his gun off for that sign. He told me that it was against the law to carry in a bank. When I got home I checked my Oklahoma statutes for any sign of that and couldn’t find anything to support that. Now a “no weapons” sign is pretty ambiguous as I always carry a knife, not as a weapon but a tool. So just what is a weapon? I still carry my gun in the bank as usual at least until they ask me not to. I’m pretty sure they know I still carry concealed because I’ve griped at their “no weapons” sign on the front door. For the life of me I cannot figure out how the pawn shop owner came to figure that there was no carry in any bank.

Has anyone out there ever heard of a law suit against a company that posted their business and then ended up having customers hurt because they obeyed the sign and could not protect themselves when the bad guys ignored the signs and came in with guns?

New guy here.

When I took my conceal carry class (~7 years ago) our instructor specifically told us that we could carry in businesses even if they had posted a no guns sign. If they asked us to leave then we should and if we refused then it was trespassing. That has been my understanding up to this point.

I have read this entire thread and it caused me to re-read the the SDA lawbook dated Nov 2010. In the lawbook I find this:

TITLE 21 § 1290.22. Business owner’s rights
BUSINESS OWNER’S RIGHTS
A. Except as provided in subsection B of this section, nothing contained in any provision of the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act, Section 1290.1 et seq. of this title, shall be construed to limit, restrict or prohibit in any manner the existing rights of any person, property owner, tenant, employer, or business entity to control the possession of weapons on any property owned or controlled by the person or business entity.
B. No person, property owner, tenant, employer, or business entity shall be permitted to establish any policy or rule that has the effect of prohibiting any person, except a convicted felon, from transporting and storing firearms in a locked vehicle on any property set aside for any vehicle.

To me that means it is against the law to carry in a posted business. I hope I am wrong about this.

This is covered by the trespass laws, which are not in the SDA.
Fortunately, this issue seldom comes up with concealed carry, but I know of one case that started by a clerk spotting an (almost) concealed handgun in the credit union I frequent. The sign on the door was deemed sufficient notice to detain and question the person. He wound up in jail with more problems than trespass, but that's how it started.

What about hospitals? I see the gun buster signs but what's the law on this?

Depends on the hospital.

Is the hospital owned and operated by the local government? Some rural hospitals are actually ran by the county or municipality. Most hospitals, though, are managed by private companies (Integris, Columbia, etc.).

I know that one of my local hospitals used to be posted the same way as the county courthouse, city hall, county jail, etc. But a couple of years ago the signs at the hospital were removed and it seems that Comanche County Memorial is managing it now (i.e. all bills are sent there instead of the local hospital; local hospital is still funded through a tax earmark, though).

So in other words, some hospitals may be treated by the law differently than others.

I called the security office at St. Francis last time I went and they told me as long as it was concealed it was fine. Of course that may have been just the opinion of the guy answering the phone, but I at least figured that he would be working that day so I would be OK. I carried.

Cool, I'll make a few calls.
