I have seen far more failures to educate from public school then I have from private or homeschooling but there is a difference. In most of the public school failures it has not been the teachers fault but the systems. In most of the private and homeschooling failures it is the teachers.

The line about exposing your kids at a young age to degenerate peers being a way of preparing them has got to be one of the most tired, foolish arguments against home schooling used.

Especially since it hinges on homeschooling meaning that the entire education process takes place at home. Anecdotally, most homeschoolers I know have regular "field trips" for their kids to places like the Zoo, Omniplex, museums, art galleries, gallery at the State Capitol, nature parks, public college lectures, etc.

Plus, the education can actually be tailored for the child.

Homeschooling is fine, for some. I think too many people assume that parents are automatically qualified to school their children. They aren't. Nor does everyone make a good parent just because they can have kids.

I personally know some (yes, more than one family) who home-school their children and they are as dumb as a box of rocks. Their children are not up to par with most public schooled children of their own age, and it's at no fault of the kids.

So, what's the solution?

My sister home schools, I have mixed feelings. My 11 and 9 year olds go to public school and they read at high school or above levels.

It may "tired", but it's true. These kids can't deal with peer pressure, bullying or any of the other BS that goes on throughout life. My kids are taught at school and my wife and I reinforce it at home. Public school is not perfect, but neither is home school. If you do a great job home schooling, then great, but most people don't.

Maybe have their kids homeschool their parents. Sad to say but some parents have no business teaching their kids. Maybe there are some good online programs that could work well for theses families.

That is my point, my wife and I are educated people, my wife has a teaching degree. We send our kids to public school. My sister has a degree in psychology. They home school. Social skills learned from a bunch of recluses are not applicable social skills in the real world. Just because you group up with like-minded people doesn't mean that your kids are set up to handle regular people.

Homeschooling could be the last bastion of saving our next generation from the despicable indoctrination that seems to be the status quo from our wonderful public system.
Capitalism is a good design, and this is taught less and less these days.
Unfortunately we parents don't all have the time and schedules to homeschool and are left with no choice but to send our kids to school with the rest of the neighborhood, however degenerate that might be.

In my Cub Scout den where I am a leader, we have a couple homeschooled kids and they outperform the others in every regard. "Just sayin'"

My 11 and 9 year olds go to public school and they read at high school or above levels.

I was that way. I quit reading books when the public school no longer allowed students to checkout books more than two grade levels above theirs. Then they went from jumping straight into new math each year to spending the first 10 weeks reviewing basics like addition and subtraction. And then they dumbed down the "accelerated" programs so that certain groups could have better credentials on college applications. So I quit "applying myself" at school and opted to complete high school in 3 years instead of 4 with minimal extra effort. The I dropped out of college after a semester because the coursework wasn't stimulating.

For what its worth, the last book I checked out from the school library in late elementary school was Crime and Punishment. I aced the test on it, so its obvious that the literacy level was there. The next book I read was Don Quixote my senior year, only because of a deal made with a teacher to read the book and pass the test so that I had at least one that year.

Just sayin'
