Wife and I have been saving up to buy a couple of touring kayaks for the last year. Well, yesterday, we put in an order for a couple of wood kayak kits from Pygmy boats (wife wanted to build wood/fiber-glass boats).

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on good lakes to paddle these puppies once we finish the build. Would like someplace calm to start with, since we have never even been in a kayak and need to start with practicing our wet exits and rescues (and would like to learn to do eskimo-rolls).

Thanks!

Hey yall, By my posts, location etc. you wouldn't think it but I do have a lot of x-perience in kayaks and touring. The best place to start learning hip movement and proper J stroke are in the nearest pool. Do you have much experience building with wood/epoxy? It can be a royal pain sometimes.

I didn't think about a pool. Good idea! I've got a coworker that has a huge heated pool. May need to sweet talk him a little.

I have some smaller scale fiber glass and wood experience with r/c airplanes and the wife has done quite a bit wood working.
