We used to drive around town looking for old furniture people left on the curb for the trash men to haul off. We'd "borrow" it for a little while and haul it to the outskirts of town, punch a hole through the arm and attach it via a steel cable to the back of my buddy's truck. We'd then drag it behind the truck at about 70 for a couple miles on a rough paved stretch we called Sandpaper Road. The internal frame of a recliner emits a dazzling array of sparks as it bounces and skims along a highway at night. It's quite a sight to see.

We'd then take the smoldering mess back to where we found it and set it in the same place on the curb.

That was life in Enid circa 1986. Hopefully the statute of limitations has expired by now.

Got to go town once a week where I grew up. Lived playing on creek from dusk till dawn and mom never worrying about us. Having to actually having to get up and turn channel to one of three stations we got on tv, then go outside to turn antenna until dad yelled good. No ac just a water cooler that would shock you when touched while filling it up with water! Windows always up in summer and doors never locked.

Man this thread really takes me back. I grew up in the country in the 70s. There was too much blow sand on the roads to ride a bike anywhere but I always had horses to ride off somewhere. I remember dad loading up my bike on Sundays we would go to my grandparents to eat dinner and they had a paved road I could ride on. Not much traffic on it back then so I would ride up and down it trying to run over trantulas while my dad and grandpa slept off sunday dinner.

I had four cousins about a half mile from my house the youngest of the four was a year older than me so we hung out alot chopping down trees to build a cabin, BB gun fights, Fishing and frog hunting at night.
A couple of times a week during the summer either my mom or his would load us up in the back of the pickup and take us to town where we could swim at the school while they visted with our great grandparents.
We would walk to their house after swimming and my great grandpa would be sitting on the porch in the evenings he would still roll his own smokes and throw rocks at the kids who used his dirveway culvert for jumping their bikes off LMAO. He was in his late 80s then and couldnt see to well or throw to well either. I think the neighboorhood kids took it as a challenge.
I didnt know it at the time but there were lots of fun times back then!

Thanks for all the posts. This was a real treat today. It is especially good as I listen to music while I read.
I also remember having a large collection of the big steel toy cars and trucks. You know, the ones you could actually put dirt in the bed of the truck and haul it on the road you made over the bridge and across the river to the dump yard. It was great!!

Who collected pop bottles? I can remember collecting enough to fill a shopping cart. We would take them to Safeway and get our deposit.

I remember when you thought you had struck gold when you found several bottles gathered up close to each other on the side of the road.

Ahhhhh, the good times..............

First, we survived being born to mothers Who smoked and/or drank while they were Pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, Tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, Locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, We would ride in cars with no car seats, No booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.

Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day Was always a special treat.

We drank water From the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, From one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?

Because we were Always outside playing... that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, As long as we were back when the Streetlights came on.

No one was able To reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps And then ride them down the hill, only to find out We forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, No video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, No cell phones, No personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS And we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth And there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, And the worms did not live in us Forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, Although we were told it would happen, We did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and Knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just Walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal With disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law Was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best Risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

Everybody today thinks they're entitled to be happy reguardless of the effort they put forth, and it's always someone elses fault.

Nobody's mentioned tv dinners, with that square piece of cake that looked so good, but was such a disapointment. The first attempts of diet drinks, Mr. Pibb and Diet Rite:puke:
