I went to Lexington today and shot a few over the chrony.

Now I have read that IMR 4064 gets back the lost velocity in a short barrel .308 for some Handloaders.

I built 5 rounds in a ladder With a 150gr flat base Speer spitzer bullet.
Starting at 45.5 gr and then up the charge .5gr at a time until I reached 47.5 gr.

The chambers are different in both of these guns..the savage being tighter and shorter.
I used winchester cases that all measured exactly the same every where.Annealed etc etc.
No crimps and all bullets seated with same pressure.

Now what blew my mind.
Savage 10 SR with heavy 18" barrel was up first.
Round one and velocity.
#1......... 2796 fps measured at 20 feet from the muzzle.
#2.........2804 fps.
#3.........2863 fps.
#4..........2740 fps.
#5..... error.
The gun did not care for this bullet and loads and shot about 1.5" group.
But remember this is with different powder amounts. It just looked bad.

Now these bullets are seated 2.762" which is just .005 off the lands.
I seated the Ruger's bullets at 2.793" for the same jump to the lands.

Ruger with 22" barrel
#1 .......2756 fps. same 20 feet from muzzle.
#2........2787 fps.
#3........2898 fps.
#4........2880 fps.
#5........2793 fps.
You could cover the group with a quarter and the last shot would be hanging low and right out of the quarter.

What surprised me is shot #3 which came up 100 fps and shot 4 were right on top of each other.

I posted here under guns. because 18" barrel vs 22" barrel not a lot of velocity difference.
Here is something else different between these 2 guns.

The savage when you pull a bore snake through it is goes through kind of easy.
The ruger has about 2x the tension to be able to pull the snake through it.. tighter barrel.

My mossberg 100 ATR in 30-06 is tight like that also.
I had another heavy barrel 308 savage and it was easy to pull the snake through it.

Just saying maybe the barrel ID has a lot to do with velocity ..something not talked about very much.. Everyone concentrates on barrel length and not much else.

Yes I was at the top of the load chart and velocity began falling off.

Having fun with numbers is all.

NOTICE :These loads are safe in my gun and you should consult a manual before attempting to duplicate loads someone posts on the internet.

It is a little pencil barrel on the Ruger.
.575" at the muzzle and 12" back from the muzzle it measures .715"
.800" for the savage and 12" back it measures .972"
If that is what you wanted to know.
Round NOT fluted on both rifles.
