I shoot at Red Castle pretty regular, and we only have a 600 yard range to shoot. Once a month they have a 1000 yard match that they shut the range down for since you have to shoot over the top of everything for it. I have thought about trying it, but I have only been shooting and reloading for about 2 years now. I am still trying to read the wind and without any practice at that distance I really hate to just show up and slow the entire match down for everyone else because I don't have my stuff together.

I would love to plink around at 1000 though just to see.

Only one way to find out.
Does magnification play into this at all as well as objective lens?

You'll notice a lot of mirage at higher magnifications, especially when shooting long distance. Honestly, a 10x is plenty sufficient if you have good/decent eyes. I wouldn't recommend going over 16x. But that's me. So a 2.5-10x, 3-12x or 4-16x would serve you very well.

Here are 3 great options:

What are you shooting your 308 at? Paper? Steel? Critters?

Size of the target will and intended use of the rifle will determine the scope. Internet is wonderful place where everyone's opinion counts regardless of facts - but trust me hitting or NOT hitting your intended target will be a matter of fact; so is a proper choice of the scope - it's a matter of fact. Last thing you want is high magnification scope with glass not up to par - quality of the glass must be #1 priority (which in my personal experience makes any Vortex NOT a contender at any price level).

You can't hit what you can't see!

Best bang for you buck IMHO:
F-Class - Sightron or Nightforce
Tactical - Bushnell Tactical or SWFA
Hunting - Nikon, Leupold or Bushy 3200

Do-it-all - March/S&B/USO/BEAST ($3k+ :bigeye: )
