Security film for glass

The Yukon home invasion thread got me thinking about the security film for my sliding glass door. I've seen it on The Best Defense show, but have no clue where to buy it/have it installed. My google searching I did a while back left me with few answers.

All that said who has it installed, and are you happy with it?

was really designed for hurricane window protection. i once saw on tv a 9mm fired into a piece of 2 layers of glass with a film in the middle, like safety glass. bullet did not penetrate but broke the glass. lowes sells a full view security door made by larson has heavy a frame and 3 locks on the side with this glass. no bars doesnt look like a security door. next upgrade to my house will be one of these on both doors.

I have the Larson security front door. I'm talking about my rear sliding door, and the other sheet of glass next to it.

If you are talking about the silver 3/16th wide tape that you put around the edge of the glass about 2 inches from the edge, I do not believe that is available anymore. Radio Shack was the last supplier I know of to carry it, but I believe they stopped stocking it several years ago.

As an retired alarm tech I can tell you that that stuff is a major pain. It has to be on the inside of the glass, shellacked over to protect it, the kids scratch it, the dog claws it off. And you never know it is broken until you try to set the alarm when you are going to bed or leaving the house. Trying to find a very small break in that tape is a major pain, I know years ago I had customers both commercial and home systems that would have a problem and it might take several hours to find the break. To say that I disliked that tape is a mild statement, when I was told the company I worked for no longer "serviced or guaranteed" foil tape, I took all I had in my truck and threw it in the dumpster.

If you have a working modern alarm, it probably has a "STAY" mode that lets you set the perimeter devices that will trigger the alarm without any delay when you are in bed asleep. You just have to be careful in the morning and turn off the alarm before you open the front door or you will generate a "false" alarm.

Many customers have a second keypad in their bedroom and motion detectors installed in remote areas of the house. If they have a two story home, they may have motion detectors installed downstairs that give full area protection while they are in their bedroom. Depending on your floor plan, number of and age of children, pets and lifestyle, you can have modern motion detectors installed in the areas of the house that you wish to protect. This will make them "off limits" and the alarm will be triggered when the house alarm is set to "STAY MODE" from your bedroom keypad. Most keypads have an "EMERGENCY" button or combination of buttons that you can press to make a "DURESS" call to your alarm company in the event of a problem/breakin. These are usually set up so they are operational even when the alarm is "OFF". If you have motion detectors installed have the company install the combination of microwave and infra red unit. This type of unit has the lowest false alarm rate, I do not like the straight infra red units as pets and hot spots (heat ducts and such) cause false alarms.

By the way a word to the wise.
If you do not use your alarm system on a regular basis. WHEN YOU HAVE THE CAR PACKED AND THE WIFE AND KIDS ARE SITTING IN IT OR YOU FLIGHT LEAVES IN TWO HOURS AND YOU TRY AND SET THE ALARM. THE ALARM WILL NOT SET BECAUSE SOMETHING HAS NOT WORKED PROPERLY FOR SEVERAL WEEKS OR MONTHS AND YOU DID NOT REALIZE IT, I ALMOST GUARANTEE THIS WILL HAPPEN TO SOMEONE THAT DOES NOT USE THEIR ALARM ON A REGULAR BASIS.

Do not call your alarm maintenance company and when you are told you will be scheduled to have the system looked at in two days and the alarm tech will be there between 10AM and Noon, DO NOT have a screaming fit. Other customers had problems, called in and got scheduled to get repaired at the time you called in and demanded that a tech show up at your house in fifteen minutes. You should have been using the alarm on a regular basis and realized something did not work within 24 hours of it breaking.

As you can tell I had/have a lot of sympathy for this type of customer. You would not believe some of the language this type of customer uses to some of the female telephone operators and some of the demands they make when this happens.

That's the stuff my ex put on her windows. It won't stop a bullet, but it is almost impossible to get through

Just remember that these films that make it hard to break the glass work both ways. This means that in the event of a fire you may not be able to escape as well . I was in Florida they couple of years ago at the IBS convention and they had some windows with these films on display where you could try and break out the glass with a baseball bat or a fireman's axe the windows were very effective at stopping most people from breaking it.

That looks like it. I'll have to look on the computer at home. Tough to tell on my phone.

As for the home alarm, it is used daily. I just want a little more protection from someone easily breaking the sliding door glass and coming in that way. I have other glass to break in the event of a fire that would be much easier to break than that thick glass.
