I hear Walmart is putting in cameras for self check out. When someone puts an item in the bag without scanning it, the camera sends a signal to a manager, who then comes and says there is a problem with the machine and takes the customer over to a checker.( Not allowed to call them a thief)…In my opinion Walmart and other stores accelerated the ramp up of theft by installing self check out. People, especially low income people will be tempted. It’s a natural thing. Come on, don’t tell me you haven’t been tempted or just kind of forgot something was on the bottom of your cart. I think it is going to get a lot worse if this Israeli thing causes the price of oil to escalate. Everything in our world is made of or transported by petroleum products.

Sorry to disappoint, but no, I've never been tempted to 'forget' something on the bottom of my cart - I was raised better than that!

You forgot about the tattoos and car parts
Didn't forget about tattoos. Just didn't want to offend some of our fine forum members that don't associate tattoos with fat and ugly welfare recipients. Might as well toss in cigarettes, casinos, and lottery tickets while we are being mean.

They put the self checkout in to save them money. Not to save you money.

Was at Lowe's McAlester today with a shopping cart and flat cart loaded up. We get to the front and only self checkout are open. I guess they don't have checkers anymore.

I don't know if they had anyone down at the lumber end or if it was self checkout there too. There was one employee standing watching the 4 checkouts.

On another note , they have all the Romex wire locked up . They had some up above the cage doors on top shelf. Unattended ladder platform right in the same aisle.

So I push it over to the wiring and help myself to the top shelf. Was a lot easier than trying to find someone with the key.
Same problem with neighborhood Wally World. Came in, two cashiers on duty, by the time I finished shopping, the only lane left had a closed sing sitting on the counter. Asked the guy if someone would be opening another lane, he says no like he couldn't care less. I walk to the door and holler back, you might want to get someone to put that stuff back because a lot of it is frozen.

All new ideas succeed, or fail, on their own merit, eventually. When the hype, dies down, and the subsidies stop, is when we find out which ideas will actually work. Battery powered vehicles, or self check outs, are no exception. I suspect this cost retailers more in thefts, items not scanned, etc. If this cost more than manning the check outs with people, if they can hire them for what they are willing to pay, they will go back to people, if not they will continue with this!! It's called the free market system, and this has worked VERY WELL for us so far!! The highest standard of living in all of human history, and that ant bad!! Government interference causes far more problems than it fixes, just look at ALL communist nations, standard of living, throughout history!!!

Self-checkout lanes were introduced in 1986. I'm pretty sure that companies would have figured out by now whether they were a keeper. They're here to stay and exponentially spreading, so like it or not, we have to adapt to using them because the 'live-cashier' is becoming obsolete.
