When my BIL was on guard duty they had unloaded weapons. Had to get base commander approval to load and engage. (That was 40 years ago)Unclear if in the initial shooting if the guards were in fact armed . Article claims that with additional guards post the 1st attack, that in the 2nd attack, shots were “ exchanged”.
Do guards @ guard posts in country, & foreign bases in friendly countries, have armed weapons ?
