I have a spinal stimulator implanted in my back, that helps deaden my back pain. The pain is from damage from arthritis and essentially has eaten away at my entire spine, it looks grey on MRI instead of white. Today I was going in for another MRI to see how my back is progressing and I attempted to put the stimulator in MRI mode. They can't be running while they do the scan and will burn up, if left on. The damn thing wouldn't go into MRI mode and then wouldn't go back into therapy mode. The reps will not be available until Thursday, to try and do anything about it, but it's looking like "it's dead Jim". The problem is probably in the leads according to the reps description over the phone, which means I have to get a new one. While this one was over 5 years old it still had battery life left and I hadn't planned on replacing it this year. So now I have a dead piece of plastic and metal riding around in my back, until I can get it fixed or removed. All the while I have lost the benefit of having some protection, from my back pain. Yay me. Just needed someplace to vent, thanks for playing. No range time for me for a while.

I feel ya. Didja get off of pain management to get that there deeevice?
No, I got it through pain management. I still have prescriptions I have to take, the stimulator knocks about 30% of the pain out, meds another 30% and I have to just deal with the rest. The next step after the stimulator, if I ever reach it, is a pain pump. You do have to get off meds for those as they take the place of oral pain killers.

My old boss had a nerve simulator to deal with a spinal issue due to it having been damaged by irradiation during his attempted superhero conversion. (OK, it was really cancer treatment, but I like my version better, and I bet he would’ve wished he’d thought of it.) Late in his life he had severe back problems, and he couldn’t get an MRI unless they removed it, which was kind of a pisser because his insurance hadn’t covered its installation and wouldn’t cover its removal, either.

I hope yours goes a lot better than his did.

New ones are MRI compatible, but you do have to put them into the right mode first.
