A great home made cosmoline, is to take common automotive grease, and mix it 50-50 with solvent, or at least until it is fairly thin. drop any metal parts into the mixture, remove and hang by a wire. The solvent will evaporate leaving a thin coat of grease in all of the hard to reach areas. Vacuume seal, and your good for a long, long time.
My grandpa did this to his plow blades every year. After he passed, one set was in the weather for many years before I put it back in use. Still corrosion free under that coating.

I'd say cosmoline or axle grease, and like Rick said, PVC.
Well if you vacuumed sealed it the proper way, wouldn't it be good to eat?
That's a good idea, also if you wrap the gun in diapers, they will absorb all moisture w/o hurting your gun

Hope you like to dig 4' is really deep when doing it by hand. But hey at least you will be in shape!
I'm thinking that would be like leaving a gun in a cloth gun case.....instant rust. Is there something I don't know about?
