As best I can figure, the fear of switchblades is due to the movies. Amazing how a fear inducing portrayal of an inanimate object can end up stripping rights from people.

That's exactly where the law came from.
Reaction to movies and general ignorance has been used many times to pass stupid laws.

The dumb law that restricts deer hunting with an AR to 7 rounds is a prime example. Its ok to hunt with a hundred round drum mag on an AK or AR-10. Just not with 5.56/.223.
