Dude they set aside a whole day to honor us and our fallen brethren, i don't care whether i'm off work or not, as long as people are taking time to remember my brothers who fell, those that came back mentally or physically scarred and the old guys who fought the real horrible wars.

I'm just glad i can still work.

I'm off and although I was in Iraq and Kosovo, I was a private contractor. However, I will be picking up my kiddo at the day care and taking him to the parade in Tulsa. My Dad who served in Viet Nam is not sure if he is getting the day off or not.

Corporate HQ (in California) has urged us to take Thursday off (a vacation day) since the banks and courthouses and post offices will be closed. I told my boss i'd take off, but that I thought all Veterans, especially decorated veterans, should be given a day off. He agreed, but I'll still be charged a day of vacation. So I'm taking my wife to H&H to brush up a little before she goes to La Emperatriz's class Saturday.

I was fortunate enough to have spent the Viet Nam war in Topeka. I never got shot at, but I spent a lot of time in the ass-end of camoflaged C-130B's dropping stuff out the back end and later working in the aircrew training section at Wing Headquarters. Those Herks are amazing. In 1968 I was working in 1958 models. They were bringing in new E models as I was leaving. And they're still making the durn things. Wow.

Heck, I might just put my old ribbons on a khaki shirt and parade around the house.

Seriously, though, much thanks to all you Vets, young and old, for your service to our Country. Cherish every day in this great Republic.

It has always bothered me that the majority of veterans I know including myself are working on the one day set aside to honor all vets. All state and federal employees are home enjoying a day off and many of them never having served a day on active or reserve duty.Whats the deal"

I'll take a shot at answering your question. The Federal and State governments give a veterans preference for veterans when hiring (or used to). Since many served due to WW2, Korea and Vietnam there were many veterans employed by them, probably 50% or more of the workforce. That seems to have gone by the wayside over the last 20 years or so. Same thing happened in the U.S. Congress as at one time military service was almost a requirement to get elected, now very few have served.
