That's all we had growing up. Never had a problem with rust or gummy mess. That and some 3-in1 oil kept everything operational. Old timers back in the day had less.

As far as chains, they should be cleaned with hot solvent, allowed to dry, and cleaned once again in fresh hot solvent, allowed to dry and then put in hot 80W90 gear oil, then hung to drip the excess.
Back in the ATC racing days, one of our sponsors was Tsubaki chain. This was their recommendation.
They gave us cases of chains to give away at races.
an old Hot Rod magazine article written about a old school oldmobile man,whoses name i cant remember, anyway when he got new timing chains he put them in a pan of new motor oil and put in a old toaster oven outside at 300 degrees for 2 days,, he said they lasted twice as long..

Most lubricants thicken up with cold weather,
Most of the new synthetics stay pretty fluid at those temps these days, but when we hunted in near-zero weather back in the day, we ended up with using dry graphite as a lube. For the record it was Ruger Mark II pistols in .22rf hunting rabbits behind beagles.

I had a browning a bolt freeze up on me once. It’s never good
