...for me to FINALLY purchase an AR-15.

I had one many years ago but sold it to fund another project.

Now that the election is heating up and there's a chance that the wicked witch might be our new POTUS, I thought I had better buy one before it's too late.

Now then...here's my dilemma. I can't afford much on a cop's salary. I'm talking $500-$600 max. Is it possible to find a plain Jane base model rifle for that little moolah?

All I'm wanting is a standard M4 with a fixed carry handle. A flat top means optics which means more money, so I just want a fixed carry handle rifle with iron sights and plain ol' handguards instead of a quad rail.

I'll probably put a Magpul MOE handguard on it later because I want to put a light on it but nothing else. I also want just a standard A2 fixed stock instead of a 6 position.

I know, I know... :screwy:

Also, what is a good round for duty use? I know absolutely nothing about ammo for the damned thing.

This is basically unchartered territory for me. Please be gentle.

Yes still very doable. Check this out -http://palmettostatearmory.com/ar-15-05/rifle-kits.html

I looked at that website and those were all flat tops. I guess I could buy a BUIS for my rear instead of a carry handle. I just like the look of the fixed carry handle for some reason.

My dept. doesn't really have a policy on patrol rifles. My chief says pack it if you got it.

Ok, I'm curious...

Why do so many folks want an AR?

I've never understood the desire, unless you feel the need (and do the machine work) to build an alledgedly untraceable firearm. Otherwise, they're basically just a semi-auto rifle.

Is there a huge "cool" factor involved? Or am I missing something?

I'd say ammo availability and price, magazine capacity (and weight when fully loaded), and replacement part availability speak for the AR15 but what do i know, im just a brassy internet warrior

Another vote for PSA. Sign up for daily deals. Ive got a couple sub $500 rifles by waiting for complete upper/lower deals. IMO, the magpul lowers are worth the extra 20 bucks.
