They aren't obsessed with it so much as convinced that when it happens legitimately, the female's lady parts throw up a magical sheild against rapist sperm. That's the issue. This is why there is no room in the right to life ammendment for abortion exceptions in the case of rape and incest. Legitimate rape never results in pregnancy.
Gotta say I'm with JB on this one. I understand that at the core, they (Republican politicians) are just appealing to their base, and they (pro-life Republicans) are just trying to do what they think is right for the unborn, i.e., ensuring the right to life. While I understand, and would call myself conservative for the most part, on social issues I'm not. They'd get a lot further if they held in the more, well, extreme comments on the matter.
Romney is really taking a huge risk here by condemning Akin's comments. If he's not careful he'll alienate the rapist demographic. Can he afford to lose the rapist vote? That's the question the pollsters have yet to answer.
I'm currently at call center. We're cold calling rapists to ask who they plan to vote for if the election was held today. We know our margin of error is pretty high, but we're doing our best to compile data. 83% of people hung up on me when I said "Yes, is there a rapist of voting age that lives in this house?" Follow ups "Are you a legitimate rapist?" and "Are you too legit too quit (raping)?"
