Even if (worst case) our establishment republicans fold and appoint a lefty in the supreme court, keep in mind that the next President WILL appoint replacements as well.

The balance can be shifted again. It may well be that a 4-5 shift towards liberalism this year is what the country will need to galvanize conservatives to come out and vote.

Like others have said the timing could not have possibly been worse, unless he died in Obama's first two years.
