I do it every year. I don't have any family so spending a grand on people who struggle this time of year, is never a question to me.

This won't even compare to you, but I remember walking out of the donut shop one morning (don't judge me
) and this young mother with two kids were just getting out of their car.The kids were talking and laughing going on about what kind of donuts they were gonna get. Well, the mother was frantically searching her purse for some cash (the shop did not take cards) not finding any.
I was about to climb into my cruiser when I heard the mother tell her kids, "y'all get back in the car. I don't have any money."
Of course, the kids were heartbroken. I had a $10 and some ones change from a $20. I walked over, visited with the kids for a minute, then handed the $10 to their mother and told em donuts were my treat this morning
The cop saves the day!
Well...at least he saved breakfast.

The amount you give doesn't matter. We do as much as we are able and the kids don't know if it's simply donuts or a toy that cost $25. The kids and everyone get a huge heartfelt feeling of a gift.That is so incredible of you.

I'm blessed to have money now, I never was growing up, and giving is a large part of my Karma return. I've given over $6k in the last 2 years, between 3 different friends who were just down on their bad choices and trying to get their life back on track with a new start.
1 of them made it and paid me back the $2700.
The other 2, well I tried but they didn't make it. I still feel good for trying to help.

We do what we can. The outcome may not be what we hoped, but we done what we could.
Like @CHenry I find people where I find them and do what I can. I don't remember us ever spending a bunch of money on any Christmas presents for ourselves. We tend to buy what we want during the year so there isn't really anything either of us want.
It started out picking up the random stranger's check in restaurants and has grown into us helping a family who lost everything in a house fire (they didn't own, it was a rental). The amount of work that woman is doing trying to take care of herself, her 3 kids and the men in her life is astounding.
I don't know how she is doing it but I am both impressed with her intestinal fortitude and a bit traumatized because I see SO many parallels to what she is going through and what I did raising my kids on my own. Just because there are other adults in a home doesn't mean everyone is actually helping.
I took her kids shopping for Christmas presents for everyone in the house (and the kids) Wednesday and I had an absolute blast! It did me more good than it did the kids and they were both VERY appreciative. She has raised a couple of really sweet babies.
Anyhow, I am happy to have kids in the house every day now and they are welcome for as long as they want to stay with me. And I will continue to help where I see a need for them. For as long as I can anyway.
