This is why I have a problem with veterans being treated as a higher class of citizen, especially with respect to self-defense... but that's another thread.

We have a whole bunch of privileged groups that never did anything for the US. They always take, never give. At least the veterans whether in actual combat or not, they all were part of a group that was working for me to the extend of putting their lives on the line and losing life or limp for me. They are the only special group I recognize, the only higher class for me. The rest of the groups are nothing to me. Foreign and domestic.

Why? To use your word, there are plenty of "wankers" who have active duty records. Or would you prefer John Kerry in the oval?

Not to mention excluding patriotic americans who, through medical or physical handicaps, wouldn't have been allowed into the military. i'm sure they have nothing to offer our country in the way of service, you know, other than catching dogs.

Name a better indicator for 'special treatment.' Race? Money? Family name? I absolutely believe that active military service should be favored above anything else with respect to political office.

No.

I don't believe anyone should be singled out for special treatment, and i never said such. What i said was that your position is insulting to thousands of Americans who would proudly serve their country but for physical handicaps and military regulations baring them from service. Because someone is born without a hand, or an arm, they aren't qualified to be mayor, governor or in congress? Because someone broke their back in high school, that person can't be president?

To say that such people aren't qualified to hold office is ridiculous. Giving favor to someone who has served is fine, so long as it's done at the ballot box and not through "prerequisites."

You can argue who is deserving and not deserving of special treatment all you want, but that is a different argument for a different time and nothing aside from a loss of rights through due process should ever bar anyone from holding public office.

I think that as long as we are America, anyone should be able to run. The problem is that we have people who voted for a socialist over a war hero. It is America, so even the people who want to take away our freedoms and spread the wealth get a vote. When we choose who can and can not run, we are taking away our freedoms.

I am sure that everybody that mentioned the vets running for office should get preferential treatment meant it in terms of personal preference, that's the way I see it.
OTOH in other areas like jobs, promotions, schools, scholarships, Federal contracts etc where there is already an established system of preferential treatment, they should be the first in line. They gave with their service, they need to be rewarded.
